Occurs when an incident electron has enough energy to knock out an inner shell electron causing an ionized atom. Once the inner shell electron has been knocked out, it creates a hole. The electrons from the outer shells begin to drop down into the holes creating a cascade of electrons until the most outer shell is left with a hole.
