An interaction where an extremely high energy x-ray (7 MeV), strikes the nucleus of an atom and makes it unstable. Before the atom can become stable again, it must eject a nuclear particle, such as a proton, neutron, or alpha particle. This does not occur in diagnostic x-ray.
